In the past month I have had discussions with Rev. Jacki Bernacchi an Episcopal Priest from White Earth as to how she might be able to help out at St. Bart’s. We first came up with the idea that she would could spend two (2) or three (3) days a month at St. Bart’s on as regular schedule. Given that she is responsible for four (4) parishes on the White Earth Reservation she would have no Sundays available. With that in mind our discussions focused on what would she do at St. Bart’s on weekdays.
In the end we determined that a regular schedule with a defined description of what she would do while here was nebulous at best. The committee direct me to ask her if we could call on her on an ‘as needed basis’ when we are in dire need of an Episcopal Priest. I contacted her with that proposal and she was more than amenable to same and said, ‘by all means that will work for her’! Again, her availability in these cases would be a factor.
With the above in mind we are still in the search mode for that part time Episcopal Priest as our spiritual leader. Art Gulette and I will do a current review of our financial situation and once again, working with ECMN (MN Diocese), attempt to come up with an outline of what we will need to bring in a part time priest. I was reminded by some parishioners that the Bishop’s Committee at the annual meeting submitted to the congregation a deficit budget. It does make things a bit more difficult for us.
We are a hearty group and we will move on.
2017 was quite a year! Good meeting!!
It still amazes me – so few people, yet so many and varied activities. From the outside looking in one would think we are substantially larger in numbers than we actually are. This is certainly a tribute to our members who participate in so many endeavors.
There was significant discussion regarding part time clergy possibilities, and, our last year’s efforts involving Trinity Lutheran, Cass Lake and later Rev. Barrow from Indiana. Although neither came to fruition, I believe these two exercises were both excellent learning experiences for the Bishop’s Committee and St. Bart’s.
The BC has directed me to continue to search for this spiritual, pastoral, go to, youth loving, Native American nurturer, and energetic part time Episcopal Priest. I am indeed sure she or he is out there! This person is needed to help us grow as the St. Bart’s congregation needs new faces in our midst!
On the business side our finances are considered stable at this time. While our reserves are up a bit, the treasurer cautioned the congregation as he pointed out: in iur forecasted operating income statement for 2018, we are projecting a deficit. This deficit is due in large part to St. Bart’s increasing out key employee’s compensation and more-so her benefit plan. This will get her close to diocesan standards, our actions were long overdue!
By all counts the ‘beginning of the year party’ on January 20th was a huge success. Credit must be given to Julie Loxtercamp and Terri Ayers and their ‘helpers’ for all their efforts to make this wonderful event happen. Thank you Julie and Terri!! We were happy to see many of our old friends at the party. It was agreed, that the bartneder while not great, was adequate. Everyone hopes this will become an annual event.
Out party again pointed out the in-accessibility of our undercroft for certain parishioners. It was brought up at the annual meeting that if we replaced three or four rows of pews in the rear of the nave with chairs, we could then easily add tables and convert that area for a dining event that would accommodate all parishioners. No action was taken at the meeting, but the BC was ask to investigate at their earliest connivence.
The Bishop’s Committee looks forward to 2018.
